The United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope has found evidence that suggests that galaxies that look old early in the history of the Universe will actually evolve into massive galaxies that exist in present day. Because images show galaxies rich in old, red stars, they have been identified as older galaxies. However, since the light has taken up to 10 billion years to reach Earth, they are seen just as they appeared in the very early Universe, just 4 billion years after the Big Bang.
