Astronomers produce detailed map of the universe

Astronomers claim to have produced the most detailed map of the universe.

It has telescope images of more than 100,000 galaxies.

Some are 10 billion light years away so are seen as they were four billion years after the universe's Big Bang birth.

The map uses pictures from the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope and took University of Nottingham researchers three years to produce.

Dr Sebastien Foucaud said: "We are traveling back through time and looking at the first steps of the formation of the galaxies."

Dr Foucaud, who presented the map at the UK National Astronomy Meeting in Belfast, says the team plans to get much nearer to the Big Bang.

The telescope is 13,760ft up Mauna Kea in Hawaii.
