One way ticket to Mars

One ex NASA employee is taking a different approach than most to the problem of sending someone to Mars. Rather than planning a mission which would require a return trip for the astronauts, he is proposing that they stay for good. A suicide mission at first glance, the possibility is perhaps not as far fetched as it would first appear. The plan would be to send living supplies in un-maned craft ahead of the astronaut(s?) and have everything needed to survive in place by the time they go there. After they had landed, they would be joined by more astronauts in aproximately 26 months, when the earth and Mars again lined up to ideally place a human lander on the planet again.
